From San Francisco to Tokyo, cities seem to be waking up to the idea of roof gardens. National Geographic has a showcase of some of the best, including this striking example on the roof of Chicago's City Hall.
While this is perhaps the most glamorous-appearing of the examples, it will be the proliferation on more prosaic roofs - the chicken sheds, offfice buildiings and flats shown in the other photos - that will make the real impact.
And there is also vertical green happening, especially in France. I remember being shown the BHV Homme wall in the Marais the summer before last, and last summer there was also the façade of the Musee du Quai Branly to admire.
