Homosex and the City

To the Gallery of Modern Art on Thursday evening for an exhibition celebrating the LGBT clan. Some entertaining exhibits, including a couple of Mapplethorpes and the curious "Spring Tree" sprouting genitalia er, willy nilly.

Unfortunately no photography allowed in the main exhibition, although I did manage a few snaps in the side galleries ( Read more... )

You bring up a point I had wondered about, as an expat. I know that Scotland, and the UK, has been very progressive in the area of legislation enabling partnerships. However, I was wondering if public opinion was moving to a more enlightened stance. You and I both know that the ned force is strong in large swaths of the country....

An exhibition like this one shows that we are progressing. It would have been unthinkable even ten years ago. But, as the visitors' book showed, there are homophobes who just can't tolerate even the idea of gay people. Queer bashing is still very-much a reality in Scotland, although the police are getting better at helping the victims.

I'm quite a shy person, so there's only a couple of people at my work who know I'm gay. There's another guy here who's quite open about his male partner, but to my knowledge he's never had any hassle from anyone here.

That said, I heard one of the alpha males in the office yesterday saying he was cold, but didn't want people thinking he was "a big poof".

So, that's a rather rambling response - basically things are better than they were - but we've still a long way to go.

I was in Ireland years ago for work. Even in Wexford it wasn't bad. So, it must be different in Scotland? I found the Irish not particularly homophobic, except for rednecks who exist everywhere. I was guest of Nicky Wallace, a str8 red-bearded bear designer in Wexford. He insisted that we drank @ 9:00AM when he came to fetch me at the ferry :-0) He said "I don't trust people who don't drink". So, I said "ok". They drank non-stop there. Is this the case in Scotland? I love Ireland. The Irish are beautiful, both sexes.

...wouldn't it be great if they could use security camera footage to track those down who left disparaging remarks.. and then publicly humiliate them? :-)
