Damn, I'm usually good about writing florid summary prose in my sleep ... but never before using Excel to make the 27 color glossy pie charts with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one.... I'm glad the deadline was extended from 4pm today to 4pm Monday, but I hope to GAWD I'm done with it before this evening ( Read more... )

Watching Neil suffer through this, I find myself very grateful that he was the one tapped for the class. :)

Pie charts with arrows??
*blink*
Challenging!

(If you start to despair, maybe you could consider reverting to an older version of Excel for this - IMHO it was easier in the older versions. Less options and therefore easier to use; more intuitive.
But pie charts with arrows ... I didn't know that was an option.)

Ah ... no, it's actually a cultural reference ... to this 19-minute song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_7C0QGkiVo

(this is a newer recording by the original artist -- he first did it in 1967).

If you don't have 19 minutes, the lyrics are here:

http://www.arlo.net/resources/lyrics/alices.shtml

... and if you don't have that much time, the part I was sub-referencing is (where it occurs for the first time -- the phrase occurs a few times in the piece):

They was taking plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and
they took twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
one was to be used as evidence against us. Took pictures of the approach,
the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to
mention the aerial photography.And cool -- of course! -- the ( ... )

I only heard the first 8 minutes of this near Thanksgiving, my folks had the record album and we used to listen every year, but I never got a cassette copy for some reason...got to get myself a copy! Thanks for the links.

Heh!
Thanks for filling the (inter)cultural void!
And thanks for all the references. I halted the youtube after 5 minutes (Thanks for anticipating that :D), but I loved the text and the wiki entry for context.

Good luck with your Excel thinger (whatever it entails now it is not the pie charts). Hope it won't take up your entire weekend!

It is pie charts (and bar charts) ... just no circles or arrows .. though there will be a paragraph (or more) beneath each one.

chuckles, I recognised Alice's Restaurant right off...and I am going to memory the links for posterity. It was good you clarified that you didn't also need to do pie charts and glossy, etc for the blind judge....chuckles.

Happy Holidays btw..mm

I don't know Excel at all, and have a challenge with Word...just so you have perspective...some of us have 'NO" chart experience unless we draws it ourself.

If C isn't able to assist you, I might know a thing or two about some charts of many flavors.

Good luck!

Good Luck! Nice having an Excel expert in the house (I do too), although I liked skimming through the 10 books the library had "Excel step by step" "Learning Excel visually" blah blah. Too late for you now, though, I think!
