Lovely warm sunny day; we headed out, bought plants, then came back and began to put them in, at which point cue Whacking Great Thunderstorm with hail. Three separate bouts over as many hours, with rain in the interim

What sort of phone did you buy? If it's not an iphone, then uploading mp3 tracks onto it would usually be done through software bundled with the phone. Then you can change ringtones and txt-tones to your heart's content. My current ringtone is the Dr Who theme while my message tone is the TARDIS taking off.
It's a Nokia 2c-01 - no bells and whistles; it's an old-fashioned thin phone, not one of those big flat ones (is that what you mean?) It has "Bluetooth", and I managed to make it and the laptop recognise each other, but I don't know how to move files from one to the other that way. (There is no software CD or whatever with it, and no USB or whatever to connect it manually to a PC). There's something called "ovi" on the phone options but it doesn't do anything useful as far as I can see - just some online shop.
I managed the ringtone & wallpaper by FTPing my mashup files onto anyprevious.com then using the Internet thingie on the phone to get to the exact URL - it seemed to automatically know where it should go. Not sure that's terribly efficient :) and clearly Not On for mp3 or whatever, but it'll do as a workaround.
I might just have to ask my preschoolers :) they probably know how to do it all...
I'm surprised it doesn't have a mini-USB cable for connecting to the pc, I thought all Nokias came with them. Does the phone itself even have a usb port? If so you should be able to use any mini cable, and drag and drop files across. Ovi is just a store, as you've discovered; they have some fun stuff but mostly I can live without.
me way out of date and more than a little Luddite.
Nothing wrong with being a Luddite when it comes to digital technology. I don't own an iPod, or an iPad, or a smart phone. Or an ebook reader.
I've always said I don't want a phone that's smarter than I am. These days I spend so little time online I can't imagine wanting to be able to access the net on my phone.
