Hmmmm. Loved it - especially the second half, which was gloriously, beautifully *insane* ... not to mention just plain beautiful - and not just for the incredible gutwrench of Helith/Harlax - but really. Really. WTF?
It's wonderful and it's cods; original/idiosyncratic/brain-eating/inspirational probably wins out hands down, but by heaven the flaws (dialogue in particular, although there seems to be a stylistic argument for that) ain't hiding. Kept getting the feeling somebody had overdosed on Lindsay Anderson (not to say that's a bad thing... :)
Kind of like... imagine a cocktail of Anderson and Von Trier and Mackenzie and wossname of The Shout, with Klarlund-y sort of attention to colour and form in the dystopic bits... *happy sigh*
Damn good fun, anyroad. Hunting up reviews and suchlike, I was struck by
this: Beautiful, annoying, half-baked and haunting, Artemis 81 stands as a brilliant example of the way in which interesting pretentiousness can be a good deal more satisfactory than solid professionalism and good old-fashioned storytelling.
Can't disagree with that. Definitely one for the favourites pile.
