I plugged my headphones into my (rather elderly in tech terms; around eight years old or so?) stereo and the whole damn thing died. Is there anything that can be done or has my stereo rung up the curtain and joined the Choir Invisible?

My vote woould be to just replace it. At this point repairing it will cost more than replacing it.
