"Harvest"

(09-21-03)

The flames leap up, licking at the air, shooting taller than any of us standing around the pit, as the setting sun paints the sky with a brilliant pastel palette.

"Leave it to you to make it hotter, Moreau," Dace growls, but there's no malice in her tone.

I shrug and stick my tongue out at her before turning back to face the bonfire. I won't admit that I could have done this in the great room's fireplace. I like the authenticity of a bonfire for the fall equinox. It's the way I've always done this when I've had the chance.

"Ready for these?" Rachel ask softly, holding up her basket. "Or do you want another minute?"

I study her face for a long moment, losing myself in her eyes. She's become so accepting of my beliefs and rituals over the years, and always lends a hand when she can. Quirking a sheepish grin in response to her pointed stare, I reach into the basket and pull out the sections of corn stalk and the ear of corn. I commit the weight, feel, and smell of it to memory before tossing the bundle into the fire and say, "Thank you for this bountiful harvest." When it's merrily burning, I repeat the process with each harvest item we grew in the greenhouse: wheat sheaves, potatoes, applies, tomatoes, squash, Rose's peas, and one of the sunflowers Emily grew so lovingly.

Once all of the harvest items are cheerfully ablaze, I dig into the bottom of the basket to pull out the small sage bundle I'd harvested only this morning. I hadn't been here to harvest it last year, so this one's still a bit too green, but it will have to suffice for now.

Before I can toss the bundle in, Rachel gently takes it from me with a smile. She murmurs something I can't quite hear and tosses it onto the fire. Almost instantly, we're surrounded by the heady scent of burning sage, and I can't help the happy sigh escaping my lips.

This has been an interesting year in this new home of ours, but I wouldn't trade a single minute of it.
