"Vigil"

Snow is gently blanketing the world outside as night progresses into morning. But I can't sleep, not even if I wanted to. Kerry's going to have to come home in a few hours, and I worry that her hip is going to cause issues in the accumulating snow. I offered to go get her, but she predictably refused, citing the hassle of bundling up Henry and Ella.
She just doesn't understand how much I do worry. It's not that I think she's incapable of getting around. Far from it, in fact, because I've seen her do it for years. It's just that I worry more now because she means more to me.
And so I sit here, huddled under a down comforter, watching the flames in the fireplace. And I wait silently on my vigil until my partner returns home to me. Safe and sound and here next to me.
