We created this situation where we have allies that are disliked by their people (i.e. Sadat/Mubarak?) but whom we desperately need in order to try to make progress on regional issues (like Israel or more that that?) that, if solved (what is the solution?), would probably bring about the rapid, massive change we've been attempting to stave off since the 1950s (a pan-Arab state? I don't understand). Why do we get nowhere in the Middle East? Because our policy is incoherent and at cross-purposes.
