"If Sara had been a different kind of child, the life she led at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for the next ten years would not have been at all good for her."

"She went to heaven," she said. "But I am sure she comes out sometimes to see me - though I don't see her. So does yours. Perhaps they can both see us now. Perhaps they are both in this room

"The Mermaids swam softly about in the crystal-green water, and dragged after the a fishing-net woven of deep sea pearls," she said. "The Princes sat on the white rock and watched them."
"It was a wonderful story about a princess who was loved by a Prince Merman, and went to live with him in shining caves under the sea."

"...One of her "pretends" is that she is a princess. She plays it all the time - even in school. She says it makes her learn her lessons better. She wants Ermengarde to be one, too, but Ermengarde says she is too fat."
"She is too fat," said Lavinia. "And Sara is too thin."
Naturally, Jessie giggled again.
"She says it has nothing to do with what you look like or what you have. It has only to do with what you think of, and what you do."

“Never did she find anything so difficult as to keep herself from losing her temper when she was suddenly disturbed while absorbed in a book. People who are fond of books know the feeling of irritation which sweeps over them at such a moment. The temptation to be unreasonable and snappish is one not easy to manage.”
If Sara had been a different kind of child, the life she led at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for the next ten years would not have been at all good for her.
chapter 5
She had been at Miss Minchin's school about two years when, one foggy winter's afternoon, as she was getting out of her carriage, comfortably wrapped up in her warmest velvets and furs and looking much grander than she knew...
Lottie is confirmed to be four. I've kind of assumed that Lavinia is the eldest because she takes charge of the smaller ones, so I guess I've thought of her as about 12 and Sarah about 10.
But then this part makes it even more confusing, in chapter 1.
"Couldn't you go to that place with me, papa?" she had asked when she was five years old. "Couldn't you go to school too? I would help you with your lessons."
I'm guessing that she started at Miss Minchin's when she was 5 years old, she was treated like a princess/parlour-boarder for 2 years, and for 8 years she was a servant.
But it doesn't really make sense because Lottie is confirmed to be 4 in chapter four, "If you are four you are four...but you will be five next year, and six the year after that. and...it only takes sixteen years to make you twenty."
Plus did it really take eight years to get Sara out of there?
I do like this edition because there is a sense of time passing, but it doesn't make sense in my head. I always just pictured Lottie being about half Sara's age.
Yeah, the timeline is really confusing at times. I’ve had to do a double take a few times and go back to reread those parts again.
So if Sara was 5 when she got there and was 7 when she basically became a slave in Miss Minchin’s household, then she was 15 when she finally got out right?
that makes a lot of sense. sara was pretty much half starved by the end of her time there. it's really sad when you think about becky. after a certain point, damage is irreversible.

I like to think that Sara becomes a professional writer when she grows up and actually turns a lot of her great ideas into novels.
