For Bloomington locals

A friend of mine has a sweet female cat, a young adult, who needs a home. Trouble is, she apparently has to be an only cat -- doesn't get along with other cats. My friend says she is at her wits' end and is probably going to take her to the shelter next week, which makes me sad, as an adult cat who doesn't get along with other cats is not likely to ( Read more... )

That's so sad. Are there any no-kill shelters around there she could take it to?

There is a small, privately-run one about an hour away. I doubt that they have any room. :( (They also don't usually get animals surrendered directly to them -- they usually just go around to the few area shelters willing to work with them, & take animals that are close to the end of their allotted time. I got Lotus from them.)

I'll suggest it to her, on the remote chance she hasn't already tried calling them.

I hate to say it, but if your friend cannot keep the cat, and there's very little chance of her being adopted from the shelter, mightn't it be kinder to euthanize her immediately?

My heart aches for the kitty and her mom, but there's something to be said for going in peace.

I have actually had that thought myself. I don't think my friend would take too kindly to the suggestion, and I'm not sure it's my place to say it to her.

It's possible that she doesn't realize how abysmal the adoption rate is at the shelter -- if that's the case, and she does take the kitty there, I'm sure the intake person will make sure she knows....

*sigh* I hope so.

I see everything through the filter of wishing I could have given Darcy a better death.

Well, I emailed J. with the info on the no-kill shelter (and one other in Waynesville, wherever the hell that is, that I don't know anything about but found a website for) and she emailed back that she has indeed decided to have the cat euthanized. She came to the realization that even if she did take her to a shelter and she did get adopted, chances were the person wouldn't keep her and it would just be too cruel. The cat's been on medication, she's tried letting her be an indoor-outdoor cat, and has apparently tried just about everything, but she destroys things and pees on everything and cringes away from being petted. I don't know what causes a cat to get like that, but she's clearly not having a happy life... maybe the next one will be better.

I feel awful for my friend; she's a perfectly good cat owner, and I really do think she's tried everything I would have tried. :(
