It depends on different factors. It can be dangerous. In Europe, while sleeping on the train my passport fell out and only had mintues to catch connecting train..didn 't know I didn't have it...and it could of been a lot worse if I didn't have a friend who lived w/ family that could speak the language. Interrogation by Germans in terrifying!
Same w/ USA, all sorts of things could happen. Make sure you have traveler's insurance, enough money for accidents/the unexpected..
also, on youth hostel site..they should have more travel tips...
