Susan was/is the Doctor's grand daughter. She was in the first season and I think that was it.

iwerewolf is right about Susan being the Doctor's granddaughter but to clarify she was in the first season (that I know for sure) of the old series.

Yeah, forgot to mention that little bit. Only first season. If I remember correctly, what's his name wanted off the show after that, so the writers made it so the Doctor would regenerate (something that is not part of the original concept of the show), to explain the change of actors.

Speaking of DW, my local PBS station is doing a marathon today. It's not on their main channel, but one of their cable channels. And of course I just now found out about it. but I've seen all the past episodes before, was able to keep up with them thanks to the net, before I got on demand and had access to the ones on BBCA through there.

William Hartnell was the First Doctor and from what I understand he wanted to stay on the show longer but had begun to have health problems and so had to leave and that's when they came up with the concept of regeneration -- which has proven brilliant over the years because Doctor Who is the one series that has survived and thrived the departure of its main actor(s) for over 40+ years!
