Word Count: 920
Date Finished: 7/28/07
Notes: PoT belongs to Konomi Takeshi. Mahou no Oujisama idea spawned by pennytook and argentdragon. This is a test piece for MnO!St. Rudolph. To fit the general theme of the AU, St. Rudolph gets a bit of a rename to Sei Rudolph (which if I'm remembering correctly, is essentially the non-translated version of the name). Dedicated to pennytook, as I remember she liked SeiRu and it's her birthday.

Yuuta hadn’t expected that he would ever get used to walking under the torii that rose above the path between the dorms and the school itself. Before he’d come here, he’d mostly seen small shrines meant more for everyday devotion instead of temples and their torii-lined paths. He hadn’t even realized that Sei Rudolph had quite the spiritual focus it did until he’d arrived here for his first year of training. That’s what came, though, of being a school located in a country where the temples held a lot of power.

“Yuuta! Wait up!” Kaneda ran and caught up with him.

Yuuta looked over at Kaneda. “In a hurry?”

“Just figured you wouldn’t leave your roommate behind,” he replied with a slight smile. Kaneda’s smile was familiar to Yuuta; it had been Kaneda, even then Yuuta’s roommate, and his friendly face that had helped Yuuta transition into life at Sei Rudolph despite the fact that they were in the same year. They hadn’t worked together in their magic training that much, particularly since Yuuta had had training for several years at home, but in aspects of school life most closely linked to the spiritual Kaneda had shared his knowledge with Yuuta. Kaneda had, after all, grown up on this island.

After passing under the last torii, they turned right toward the locker room. Now walking in a comfortable silence, Yuuta paid little attention to the students that they passed. Although the passing students were talking, the conversations themselves didn’t bother him as much as they once would have. None of them were making any connection between him and his older brother, after all.

As they entered the locker room, both boys pulled the slim chains that held their locker keys out from under their shirts. Yuuta squeezed between Yanagisawa and Nomura, ignoring their murmured conversation, and unlocked his locker. Nomura politely edged away from Yuuta, giving him room at his locker. Yuuta took the amplifier out of his locker and fastened it around his left forearm. “Yuuta, wanna go down to the city?”

Yuuta looked over at Yanagisawa as he adjusted the way his amplifier rested against his arm. “Huh? Go to the city…why?”

Yanagisawa sighed. “Girls, Yuuta, girls. You haven’t been here long enough to stop missing them, have you?”

Now Nomura was looking at him too. “Maybe,” Yuuta answered, meaning for his answer to fit Yanagisawa’s first question. “I mean, I might be busy…”

“Doing what, following up on Mizuki’s training advice?” Nomura was leaning in now. “You need to get out more, otouto-kun.” Yuuta turned to face Nomura, hands closed into fists. Nomura already had his hands up in a placating gesture. “Yuuta, I mean, Yuuta,” he said quickly.

Yuuta turned away and locked his locker, slipping the key back under his shirt when he had done so. There were definitely times where he disliked being the youngest member of the Sei Rudolph team. Not long after he’d made the Sei Rudolph team, Nomura had started referring to him as otouto-kun, seemingly heedless of how Yuuta viewed the nickname. Nomura didn’t really understand about how the nickname reminded Yuuta of the way his older brother had overshadowed him before coming to Sei Rudolph. He did realize that Yuuta didn’t like the nickname, but that never stopped him from using it.

“We’re heading down tomorrow,” Yanagisawa said, pulling Yuuta’s attention back to the original conversation. “You wanna come?”

“I, uh…”

“Give it up, Shinya.” Akazawa walked over, Kaneda close behind him. “Yuuta’s more focused on training than girls.” He looked at the three of them, Yuuta looked ready to train while the other two still hadn’t put on the amplifiers. “Which is a mark in his favor at the moment.”

Understanding that as a mild rebuke, Nomura and Yanagisawa hurriedly turned their attention back to their lockers. Akazawa headed out to the practice grounds; Kaneda gave Yuuta a quick, sympathetic glance before following Akazawa out of the locker room. Kaneda had never been asked to accompany Yanagisawa on his attempts to chase girls as often as Yuuta had. Yuuta couldn’t help briefly wondering if he just had that kind of luck.

As Yanagisawa and Nomura started planning their trip down to the city, Yuuta exited the locker room from the door across from the one he’d come in and walked out onto the practice grounds. While he had expected Akazawa and Kaneda to be out on the practice grounds, he wasn’t too surprised to see that Atsushi and Mizuki were already there. Atsushi was quietly running through warm-ups with his usual cool efficiency. Mizuki, on the other hand, had taken up a position on the sidelines, watching Atsushi with a critical eye and probably already making plans for how to adjust the team’s training.

Akazawa walked over to Mizuki, speaking softly to him. Yuuta joined Kaneda and moved further out onto the practice grounds for warm-ups. There was no sense in getting in Atsushi’s way. Before Yuuta got too far into his warm-ups, however, a light touch on his shoulder snared his attention. Mizuki had come over, apparently intending to direct Yuuta’s training once again.

Due to Mizuki’s frequent attention, Yuuta was probably the one whose training was the most personalized out of the entire team. Still, Mizuki did have his best interests in mind, so whatever he was about to suggest, it would probably be an improvement. With that thought in mind, Yuuta turned his attention to Mizuki, ready to hear whatever Mizuki might have to say.
