Fic business

I've been going through my WIP folder, trying to make a dent in my expansive fic list. I don't exactly miss the years when I wrote one fic and only one fic because it's easy to burn out on the idea that way, but this helter-skelter scattershot approach isn't much better for productivity. One plot bunny spawns another and it never ends. I get plenty ( Read more... )

I so totally hear you on the collection of WIP's that just seems to grow every day. Mine are generally all originals, but I've got fanfic ones kicking around on my HD and some of them are literally 1/2 dozen chapters from being finished.

I have plot roaches, which are far worse than plot bunnies. They multiple like mad and can even survive stupidly long after you think you've dealt with the problem by cutting off the head. And if you happen to stomp on them to put an end to them, you only succeed in releasing the eggs.

Yeah, I remember, I came looking for you on LJ because of FFVIII and Weiss Kreuz fic and got lots of fine doll pics instead. No complaints. :D

I know I strictly speaking don't owe fandom more than I can give, but I do feel obligated to finish what I start and it's so daunting sometimes. I have a couple of original things and while I finally do want to share them by being published, I don't want it badly enough yet to be motivated to do the work. Fanfic's an easy diversion, especially on the long days, and I'd be just as happy if my published something was that research project I worked my butt off on last year.

I'm trying to stick to not posting till it's done for the shorter multiparts and the result is partly-done things cluttering up my harddrives for up to six years. I get easily sidetracked because TOO MANY BUNNIES! I open up a file, write a summary, some of the inspiring scene and dialogue, and say I'll get to it later, and there it sits evermore, taunting me. I okay with posting the really long fics on a chapter by chapter basis because I don't know if I'd find it in me to keep going to a very distant end without a little cheerleading. The Mission gets written, after all. The hazards of doing it solo. :/
