Aw, thank you! I wasn't sure if this was a good place to end it because it's not really an ending. You should read the comment fic thothmes wrote, THAT is the brilliant solution to the problem I had of believably getting Sam to come home.

Thanks, as always, for the comment. I appreciate it. :)

Watergate Tapes, Part 1 thothmes January 19 2012, 06:34:54 UTC

Watergate Tapes

Sam was alive for the Watergate hearings, but she was young then, and the chief effect they had on her world was that they prempted other, more interesting programming that she would have preferred to watch. But she did remember that the dull men in Washington, in their suits and ties were very interested in an eighteen-and-a-half minute gap in some tape. It was a number, and to Sam, numbers have always been memorable. Eighteen-and-a-half minutes. Not long, really, in the scheme of things. Not as long as eighteen-and-a-half days. Not nearly. The pain won't even have begun to dull in eighteen-and-a-half years if...

She refuses to think about it. Won't let her mind go there. But it does. Ever since the news had come, from the Odyssey, almost out of communication range. A dirty bomb. At Homeworld Security ( ... )

But suddenly Lt. Andriessen is smiling. Smiling!

A crackle. It's faint, the signal thin and straining, the bandwith barely enough for audio, out here between the galaxies, but the voice is rich and gruff, and ever so familiar.

"Carter, Hammond, you there?"

She can feel everyones eyes on her, but it's an illusion. They are all looking away, giving her space.

"I'm here, sir," she says.

"And I'm here," he replies.

"Good to know, sir. We were... concerned."

"I was hoping you hadn't heard."

"Odyssey told us, but they were almost out of range. A dirty bomb, they said ( ... )

Can I just tell you how absolutely perfect this is? I've been sitting here for three days wondering if this part of the story would be a good ending because really, it's kind of not an ending at all. YOUR story is the ending I couldn't figure out when I tried to wrap my head around it and this is just brilliant. In fact, it's brilliance²! Thank you thank you thank you for this, I love it! It's my favorite comment fic yet! :D

I had a really crappy day yesterday (it sometimes happens when you're a mom and both kids decide that today's the day they want to pick fights and have ISSUES), and finding this message was a real pick-me-up!

Yay! I pleased SOMEBODY on a day I couldn't seem to please anybody! Yay!

I'm so glad you liked it.

Oh, I hate those days! Glad to have been the person you pleased though because you really did. I walked around with the biggest smile all day. :)

I love the way you write their version of ordinary, the moments when they shed their professional lives and inhabit the personal. But it's always there, the professional, creeping in, lurking in the corners, waiting to re-emerge.

I agree that he'll tire of it sooner. That he'll find a point, probably someday soon, when he will be content to let others handle the load, because he's carried it too well for too long without sharing the load, and that he'll be ready for that before she is, because she's never really been as alone in bearing it, unless something really brings home the message for her.

I always thought he'd stick around until she gets tired of it, too. Of course he's not going to admit the fact that he can't go to Minnesota alone, not being the first person to know if something happened to her out there. But politics isn't really his thing at all and I wonder how long he can last knowing that she's not yet ready to let go ( ... )

Yeah, I really feel for Jack in Washington. I think he'd grow into the job, and even might be good at it, in his own unique way, but he'd only want to do it as long as his "kids" are still out there.

If Sam really did decide to come home for good, and retire (unlikely) or be offered the SGC in an attempt to retain her (more likely), I think he'd quit retire, especially if Daniel were to not be going offworld as often either. Jack seems a little weary every time we see him in Washington.

And yeah, I'm sure he really wants to pin that general's star on Sam's shoulder.

Awesome! Of course, when I read the M rating I thought there'd be more, you know, M-stuff. ;-) But this is very, very nice.

Oh, the M was for "more than usual" because this story was four pages long instead of my usual three pages. :p J/k. I thought, OMG you mentioned sex, it must be M! I'm paranoid like that.

Glad you liked it!
