I've started swinging a sledgehammer at the fortress that separates me from my writing.  It used to flow like crazy and I know it's what I need to be doing - but I have been unable to break through ever since I started working in the real world ( Read more... )

Start with morning pages from The Artists Way.... just write free hand, whatever comes to mind, for 10 minutes every morning. It can be gibberish. It can be incomplete sentences. Doesn't matter. Just get used to writing again. Once you do that for awhile, you will find that the words flow more easily.

Another thing you can do is get someone to give you daily assignments and write about that for a paragraph or a page.

As to what to write - that's all intuition, in my book. (pun intended)

This is totally non-productive in the monetary sense, but I broke down my block (yes, several years long) by getting sucked into fanfic. :P NaNoWriMo also helped.

The trick, and I still struggle with this, is to sometimes stop thinking about "what to write" and just show up and write SOMETHING, because once you start writing SOMETHING, the ideas flow easier and you're more likely to get down to where the good stuff is.
