Looks like DC Universe Online is the next MMO to go to a "free-to-play" model. I can't decide if this is a sign that it's the better business model, or a sign that it just can't stay in business with a "pay-to-play" model ( Read more... )

And that would be a huge bonus, sure, the social aspect taken to a family level. I do miss playing the game with people that were friends even beyond the game, and I'm glad that I've kept a lot of them even though I'm not in it any longer.

I just can't seem to get excited about the concept of coming back. I had something like 50+ characters when I left, and knowing I'd be stuck with a total of 6 slots is harsh. Sure, lots of them werre experiments that I can easily let go of, and several were dedicated teams that are long past, and they can go away, too. But I'd want one or two of my original 50's up again, to test all new content, and half the fun I had was trying new looks and new power combos. Harder to do that when so restricted. Add that to my feelings on the game direction, and I just don't know.

We'll see. Hell, it's free, so I might do it anyway because it's not like I'd be losing anything!

Been thinking about mentioning it to you. Galaxy City is destroyed, and the setting of the new tutorial. Now I think of the Regulars every time I roll a new toon.

And it's little bits like that that make me consider logging in, just to see what's what. I'm still a little chapped at having to effectively scrap so many toons, but, again, for free, I might at least poke around.

For CoH, if you have been a paid subscriber, a lot of those restrictions are lifted. The invention system, mission architect, etc are still available. The main limiter is incarnate content, and for me, I've yet to reach the level cap, so it doesn't affect me.

I'm still a diehard EQ2 fan. Subscribed again last week and the magic hasn't faded, I'm having a blast running around as my Erudite Paladin exploring snowy wastes, or retooling my Ratonga Necromancer to be a more effective crafter of shiny trinkets.

I do like the F2P model a lot, when it's done right. I've sunk more time into League of Legends in the past two years than I have into any other game, even Diablo 2, and I was playing that competitively at on point.

That said, I'm far too excited about three upcoming mmos: SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, and The Secret World. It's a good time to be a MMO fan.

Yeah, but still, 6 total slots for me? If i want to play, some have to go to new toons, and that means even more of my old alts gathering dust. Just kinda sucks.

F2P isn't as bad if you are a new player, though. At least for me, when I try a new game, i tend to make one toon and stick with it, to try and see everything. it's only after capping out that I get that bug to now try every other class/build.

SWTOR has some attention from me, too. Whether I go play it is very much up in the air, but at least I'm looking.
