Calling on connections!

 So while my own readership is probably tiny, I'm hoping to reach out to the bigger social network that ya'll are connected to. I want to go out for the evening in black tie. My potential date for this affair will only feel comfortable if we find somewhere that is usually dressy enough for us not to stand out being dressed fancily there. Anyone ( Read more... )

I'm definitely not the best-informed on the subject, but I don't think there's any public venue around here where black tie is the everyday norm. Charity galas are your best bet for black tie events that any member of the public can attend. There are some events listed here. If you want to attend private black tie events, your best bet is to have connections that I don't. (If only I had such connections, I'd have to buy a tuxedo. Which is still on my "clothes to purchase" list, but several significant items down. Wish I had this guy's fame, or at least his ability to acquire great, well-fitted clothes on the extraordinarily cheap).

There are dinner venues in Boston fancy enough that black tie attire wouldn't be a problem, in my view, but your date's mileage may vary. My first thought would be Locke-Ober, I'd expect the level of formal dress there to be jacket and tie at minimum. Also worth considering: Salts and the Soirée Dining Room at Upstairs on the Square. Post is unlocked; since the concern is more from the other person, I'll need to get back to you on the answers. Also: while not a "we're scrimping pennies together" concern, money is not unlimited.
