I like most of Chris Nolan's films too! Memento was actually the first one I ever watched. I had to study it for psychology in high school and for a lit class in uni.
It is a very interesting film. It was the first time I had seen anything like it. I enjoy Nolan's complex storytelling. Oh man, The ending was definitely unsettling! The themes of creating your own identity because the memories we base our identities on are unreliable, is intrinsically disturbing!
Oh, The Prestige's ending was totally disturbing to me for different reasons.
Insofar I have liked all of Nolan's films to various degrees - some thrill me, some intrigue me, and others just suck me into the ideas. ( The Prestige was my...well, first aside from The Dark Knight which I don't want to count because it's an adaptation.)
I love that Nolan likes to play with story-telling conventions. It makes me giddy, especially when people like it so much. And I definitely agree, the end was really upsetting. It's a very visceral reaction, too, which I love. (Actually, I think a lot of Nolan's films have a visceral reaction built into them, even The Dark Knight (I haven't seen Batman Begins).)
Oh, The Prestige. I think that remains my favorite of all of Nolan's films, probably because the ending had me going "dfhdidk;j ETHICS OH THE ETHICS."
Loved the movie, but it irks me too how some films are edgy with the ambiguous ending (hence good) but don't really leave you satisfied (hence bad). Maybe I should just go back to Disney movies or something. Unless they get the gritty reboot treatment too - 'Pinochio Begins'?
Yeeeeep I'm the same way. Love the film in many, many ways, but the ending... I have a love hate relationship with ambiguous endings. IMO, if they are set up really, really well, I love them lots. But if they falter at all before that, it can get really hard to buy the ending as anything other than a last-ditch attempt for an ~*~edgy~*~ ending people will remember/talk about/be spooked by.
Oh goodness I hope not. D: I already hate Pinocchio, having a darker, edgier, grittier opening would make me scream.
I did like the movie quite a bit, once I finally started following what was going on (both times, it happened right about the middle of the film). I think I'm going to try watching it in chronological order (I think my DVD has a special feature for that) and then watch it right again, and see if that makes me love it more.
I still haven't seen Memento, soo this is a kind of pointless and ignorant post from me, yeah?
BUT-
About Memento not having a full ending, umm Inception much. I think Nolan goes a little too deep without a real closure on most his films, or so it seems. I was oddly dissatisfied coming out of The Prestige and Inception. And it's not like I was dissatisfied because it had a mysterious or potentially sad ending, it was just...saywhatnow? SO. YEAH. AHAH. IDEK WHAT I AM SAYING.
I shall attempt to watch and understand Memento and post again! Bahahah
Oh, I thought The Prestige actually had the most complete ending out of all of Nolan's films. After the final reveal - the clones, the twins, everything - and seeing Michael Caine bring the girl's "father" home? I was okay. There was an actual end to that one, even if the plot leading up to that end was full of pain and trauma. D:
Inception was very similar to Memento for me, though. I enjoyed both films, but both left me with the distinctive feeling that the movie wasn't over, or that I had somehow missed out on several distinctive plot points that would have given me a greater feeling of resolution in the end. I wanted more, I suppose, than the movie had to give me, and it left me with a nagging feeling that things weren't quite over. :/
But do go watch it! I think, if you've at least liked all of Nolan's other films, that you'll like this one okay too.
