Oh, goodness yes. For a while I was a little scared to look at my search history. I had been researching viruses and vaccines, infection vectors, carriers, various types of cancer, survival training, hiking gear, army gear, hunting knives versus army survival knives versus multipurpose tools, and the kinds of wildlife you were likely to encounter in the deserts of the Middle East. I also did research on biometrics and airport security, international flights, and airline carriers.
It was all for fic and I barely used any of the research, but I didn't want to blindly make things up either. XD;;;
Nowadays my stuff is filled with canon-checking and less distressing things (since I've already got all of that research bookmarked and saved in case I need it again).
What's the strangest thing you've found while searching?
Oh, various things like cancers, rare animals, types of guns and Parisian weather patterns. I research things for both fic and my own original fiction. I barely use most of it, but like you, I don't want to blindly make things up. I just like to have my fact straight. ^_^
I'm lucky - most of the fic research I do has original fic applications. So if I don't end up using all of the information in my fic, there's a good chance it'll come up again the my original stuff.
I think it turns out sulfuric acid is the best. There was a murderer who used it in order to dispose of remains, and the bodies were only in the stuff for two days before they turned into sludge.
I can't remember if there's a more efficient acid out there; lots of the news reports and articles that come up on Google searches aren't very specific about the type of acid involved. And maybe that's for the best.
