I have a 1GB one that I've had for about five years. It's by SanDisk and has so far worked great.
Have you checked your computer's settings? It may not be the flash drive's fault after all. I know the computers in my uni's library are set up so files on USBs can't be accessed on them. (Which doesn't make any sense whatsoever, since that's the most logical place for one to work on their files...)
I've been reading up on them, and ScanDisks seem to be the best bets. I might invest in one, just to have a backup.
I'm not sure anymore. It seems to open up fine on every other computer I've tried it on, but still hates my laptop. (My other working flash drives seem just fine as well.) I'm going to be taking my laptop in this weekend and asking about it, so hopefully I'll have a "working" flash drive again by the end of the week.
I agree, it's got to be an issue with my computer. I'm taking it into the Apple store in town this Friday; hopefully they'll be able to tell me what's going on/fix it.

That sounds a lot like the laptop's problem and not the flash drive's. Hope you'll get this all sorted out.
