Every person on the island is in possession of such a tool, and they're all connected to one another. It allows us to speak to each other over distances, in various ways. What you and I are using currently is the 'video' function, which takes your image and shows it to others in this vast network. It also plays back what you say to those looking at it.

I can't say I know for sure with these particular tools. But where I'm from, antennae are built into the devices we use. One will send information, while others around it will receive them. Much like insects use for communication.
