Twenty Days of Animé Movies - Day 4 - Steamboy (2004)

Mar 19, 2011 21:05

It would appear that as time goes by Katsuhiro Otomo hasn't gotten any less pompous or any more comprehensible.

Pity.

I could do a synopsis but I'm not sure there's any point. In the meantime I'll simply refer you to the wikipedia page. Ditto for an overview of the characters.

At this stage I'm almost expecting Revolutionary Girl Utena to make more sense when I get to it.

When the palette isn't so dark as to obscure all details there are some very nice visuals in Steamboy, as well as some fairly cool action sequences.

But other than that there really isn't a lot going for Steamboy.

The soundtrack? Well it has one that doesn't intrude on the action, but certainly wasn't good enough to get my attention.

In a comment on a locked post angriest once described Steamboy "as the gloriously pretty movie where you have to sit and watch something explode for over an hour..."

It's a great line, and all too accurate.
