His smile was the most aggravating thing she had ever come across in her three lives. The smug, top lip spread over his teeth, smile that made women swoon and intimidated diplomats. It spoke far more than confidence. It said cocky.
And cocky, she did not like.
She watched him from across the ballroom, the champagne flute in her hand grinding in protest. Perhaps, it wouldn’t have been so bad had it been one woman. But, oh no. That would have been far too boring for Jadeite. He liked a challenge.
Rei bit down on her bottom lip as one of the two women leaned in and in return, Jadeite placed a large palm upon her bum. Blondie laughed, playfully swatting at him, but never once removed his hand. Instead, she seemed quite pleased. The same could not be said for Double D who was sashaying a bit too exotically to the music.
It was then that the bastard seemed to notice her glaring and gave her a large, showcased wink.
It was as if a fire ignited within her, spreading from limb to limb, and exploding from every pore. Rei closed her eyes, an attempt to cool her boiling blood, and counted to ten.
However, when she looked back at him, Jadeite had one ear cocked to Double D who seemed to be whispering in his ear, but his eyes were focused on her, that awful smirk on his face.
The glass flute shattered in her hands, any escaped wine evaporating the moment it touched her skin.
She probably looked like some she devil but Rei felt a lioness would have been more accurate. A lioness, whose hunt, was being preyed upon.
Rei straightened her shoulders, smoothed her evening gown, and stalked to where Jadeite was standing.
“Ah, Lady Rei,” he said generally pleased but still with that devious glint in his eye. “May I introduce you to…”
“Yes, yes, a pleasure,” she snapped hardly sparing Blondie or Double D’s a glance. “May I have a word, General?”
“Why of course,” said Jadeite as he wrapped his arms around either one. “Please.”
Rei could feel the sparks shooting from her eyes. “Alone?”
That mischievous grin grew even wider. “As you wish.” Jadeite gave a courteous bow. “Back in a moment ladies.”
He followed Rei as she weaved in and out of the couples and exited through the door to the queen’s private entrance. Inside, was a small room equipped with a sofa and a few knickknacks.
Rei took no time in turning on him. “How dare you taunt me like that?”
Jadeite was the poster boy of control as he leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “Rei, you are ridiculously self-centered.”
And still, that infuriating smile.
“Self-centered am I when you have the gall to leer at me whilst entertaining two whores and then wink?”
“Why Rei,” he gasped, making a show of it. “Are you… jealous?”
“Jealous,” she snorted. “Of a two faced bastard whom I cared for a millennia ago? I do believe I have moved on. Grow up, Jadeite. Quit playing your games.”
“Moved on, have you?” He straightened and walked towards her, pinning her against the couch. “Let me allow you to show you of what you should be jealous of.”
Rei swatted at him but Jadeite easily dodged. “Don’t touch me!”
Gently, Jadeite raised his hand and pushed aside her long, raven tresses. “Do you remember the late nights we used to spend together,” he questioned, running his free hand down her side. “You miss me Firefly.”
“Don’t call me that!” Rei yelled, attempting to push him aside but Jadeite only held her closer to him.
“You’re weak, starved for affection,” he said, trailing kisses across her exposed neck and jaw. “Let me.”
“No,” she protested but it was a soft whisper. Still, even then Jadeite could hear the fear in her voice.
“I’m yours,” He leaned back so that he could stare deeply in her eyes. “I always have been. I will never hurt you again, Firefly. Let us start this life anew.”
She gazed at him for a long time, but Jadeite only held it, never flinching. It was as if she was studying him, reading his heart, and the truth in his eyes. Finally, she nodded, before grabbing him by the back of the head and kissing him full on the mouth.
