I stopped reading from the first paragraph. Turkey is not Istanbul, the Eastern parts are very backwards, not close to Europe. And the author compares Turkey to Cyprus. how pathetic. Even Romania , now a EU member, has overall higher standards and of course European prospects. Turkey as a whole doesn't, in the upcoming 50 (at least) years.
Yes, it is the religion. Islam doesnt fit within the European standards. I am not saying it is bad or good. It is just not European. Turks know this, but they are stack. They conquered and found themselves in a new environment. Now they try to deal with it. It goes down to things like headscarf or not.
I will give you my detailed answer in the evening, but let me disagree with you, esp. after my visit to Istanbul. But I promise I will write more very soon.
