Journalist Hiroo Otaka and market research firm Oricon compiled the list of top 10 films at the Japanese office for 2013 - all of which earned 3 billion yen (about US$30 million) or more. The rankings for four films below the top 10 are to be determined since two of the films are still playing.

At the bottom of the sea.

Even if the movie is good the handling of it has been so piss poor that it's no shock it's done bad. ....Oh and Jin's fan loss.

It's interesting how Ted did so good.

Ted's success is an actual miracle, foreign comedies do terrible in Japan, but they still get released on the fluke chance they'll catch on and Ted did, HUGELY.
My theory is that since you can't really translate a lot of what makes Ted truly gross into Japanese (the film is R15 in Japan), he just becomes "ecchi". And Japan has not many big movies that have more adult humor, so it ended up filling a niche and becoming a huge hit. They even made a R12 version, so younger kids could see it.

Japanese box office is pathetic. The top movie only grossed 120 million USD. Small change for Hollywood.

Well, Japan is a lot smaller than the US. The top movie in South Korea made less than that

Japan is only the worlds 2nd or 3rd economy, and between 1/2 to 1/3 of US population..... So not that much smaller

I would have been interested where Platina Data did land at the end of the year (even if I already knew that it wouldn't make it in the top 10). I'm amazed by the number of Animes that made it into the top 10!
