Not that I dislike Ken'ichi nor do I think he won't deliver[...]

Yes I think he can and will deliver, just making it clear. Hence that side-comment.

ETA: Can anyone tell that I'm criticising NHK's recent eyebrow-raising decisions and not Matsuyama Ken'ichi and/or his acting skills?
seriously OP, I get it but disagree with your point. NHK have been doing some questionable stuff lately but if they want to catch international audience they can cast Takuya Kimura (who was rumored to be in) and get a bigger fan base than L.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's more well known in Japan for things that are not Death Note. And I'll be brutally honest here, Japanese drama makers couldn't give a flying fuck about weaboos. They care about Japan - at a pinch, some other areas of Asia.

hmmm... I don't think I agree that NHK is choosing him because they want to draw and international audience. Why would they? The only people who would be able to see it is those that buy a cable package that has NHK channel (and those of us that download but we don't really count by their standards I think). Though he may be popular internationally because of "L", I think NHK chose him because he has acted in many dramas and movies lately where he has proven that he can not only act, but also that he has an impressive following of fans in Japan itself. I think they are banking on that popularity more. I think the fact that it may draw more of a international audience will just be an added bonus for them.

But anyways, congrats to him!

taiga dramas are NOT designed to be appealing to international audiences!

I will probably always view Matsuyama Kenichi as some kind of older, male Tsugunaga Momoko from an alternate universe.
