If you're looking for inconspicuous awesomeness, you'd probably be talking about a handmade acoustic guitar. The steel-string acoustics are pretty unimposing looking, but the handmade ones can cost a few thousand US pretty easily if made by the right person.

(And as for regular electrics... Probably a vintage Gibson. Not everyone realizes what they are, but the models from the 50's and 60's are almost priceless.)

I was thinking about an electric one, yeah - so I will probably look into the Gibsons. a pre-1965 Fender Stratocaster was also suggested....

That's a really good idea as well. And if the kid didn't know so much about guitar history, it would probably look like a kinda beat up guitar, with nothing to really make it special. (Until you started playing it... The pickups on those things are like the ears of angels.)

well,t here IS the sliught problem that I dono t have your e-mail, IM, or any other way of contacting you outside LJ. *hint hint* But i figured you WOULD be seeing this post :D

theguy was born in 1963, and got into playing guitar at age 8, and ot his "Baby" (aka the superspecial guitar) some time between that and 1979 when he was a founding member of the utterly fictional band, Rainspear (they couldn't spell ranseur :P ) which i am somewhat basing on saxon - except, you know, for the starting to get famous a few years later than them and losing a few drummers along the way thing.

so, witht aht in mind, you would still say a well-l9ooed after Strat? :D

No, he became a rock star at 19, cause the band took 3 years or so to actually GET anyhrere. probably because they ketp losing drummers :P

and wooooah, those are incredible! But, tbh, because, well, there is someone i greatly dislike who keeps extolling the virtues of BC Rich, I just get this disinclimnation towardss using it. would fele like letting her opinion influence me.. and sorry, anyone who calls a friend of mine stupid (like she di dbaout 5 minutes ago) ks not influemnceing me at all.

I think I might just go with the Fender strat - just, come up with a good reasoning for him to have one. maybe it was a birthday present to him or somesuch, from someonemore appreciative :P

(and incidentlaly - I am seriously tempted to include a guitar in his colelctiont hat is covered with zembra print and has silver sequins on it, too :P )
