Ignore critics when it comes to fluffy, frothy rom-coms!

Seriously. Over at rottentomatoes.com Confessions of a Shop-aholic got a measly 21% fresh in the review-o-meter. But I like the actors, and the bit I've seen in the ads, and one positive review (from the LA Times) said it was romantic, the leads had chemistry and that P.J.Hogan (writer/director of Muriel's Wedding and My Best Friend's Wedding) ( Read more... )

I actually read the book a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It was fun. Maybe I should watch the movie at some point...

I was actually going to buy the book last night, but I think I'll wait a bit because the plot sounds quite different based on the back. It takes place in New York, she just starts working for the finance magazine and writes this great article her first time out. But maybe the basics are still there ...

Ah, you won't see it for quite some time then, LOL! It JUST came out in theaters last weekend.

True but movies come out on DVD faster than you think. I seldom go to the actual movies these days.

I know, they come out 3-6 months from time of theater release. I know you're busy and thought you didn't realize I meant a movie that had just come out.

I ignore critics as a rule. Professional parasites, the lot of them. People who spent their lives throwing spitballs at those who actually do something. I have more respect for the lousiest screenwriter/director out there than for the most renowned critic. Because the they actually have the guts to put themselves out there to be judged, while the critics sit on the sidelines and indulge in their largely un-scrutinized smugness.

Okay, off the soapbox. lol.

I read the book, and I liked it. I am totally seeing this movie, for all the reasons you've listed already (also Amy Adams and Isla Fisher were SO separated at birth! lol).

See, and I'm one of those who actually find myself agreeing with the majority of critics on movies -- but apparently, not rom-coms. I know I'm in the minority with free-thinkers on the interwebs, LOL!, in that.

Let me know if I should read the book too, after having seen the movie. Just based on the back of the book I read, it seems like they've changed enough that it might just be weird going backwards.

I haven't seen the movie yet, so I am not sure what they've changed. And I read the book years ago (3? 4?), so I might not even remember the details. It's your basic romantic hi-jinx, but I liked the pace and the humor ( ... )

This probably shouldn't be the time to tell you that I was a movie/video critic for my local newspaper for about a year then? LOL!

Yay, I'm really glad that you liked it. I've been SO waiting to see this ever since the previews came out; it just looked adorable.

Adorable is the perfect word, and aside from the romance, it was absolutely HYSTERICAL!!!

I've read the book so OF COURSE I have to see it. I'm happy you thought it was good :D

I keep confusing Isla Fisher with Amy Adams, I never know which is which!

It was adorable.

After seeing this, I've figured out how to tell them apart. Amy Adams has blue eyes; Isla Fisher has brown eyes. That's, erm, about all I've got.
