VM, The Office and Shipper Fandom

Feb 17, 2007 08:24

I finally got around to watching The Office last night and I thought it was an enjoyable episode (okay, except for Michael's speech, eek!). Now, I should note here that while I like Jim/Pam, I don't ship them. I don't read spoilers, I don't analyze their scenes, I rewound their first kiss twice, but that's it. I'm not a shipper. With that said ( Read more... )

Once you start really 'shipping a couple, you really do start relating every single thing in the show to them. That's pretty much how it is for me too. I watch a show, get invested into a particular relationship, and then suddenly the entire show just revolves around them. I think it has something to do with fully investing yourself in the characters and their web of relationships.

I also think though, that that's why non-'shippers think we 'shippers are crazy. :p

Yes, you do. even TV shows I really like, if I don't ship a couple on them, I don't know them like I know shipped couples shows. I know eps titles, directors/writers, spoilers, and analyze the eps to death of shows where I ship a couple. I mean, I enjoy Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty way more than VM now, but I am so, so, so much more involved with VM because of Logan/Veronica.

yes! i think the knowing the episode titles and music is because you tend to associate the episodes with significant events relating to the 'ships. :p

( and is brothers and sisters really good? i'm kind of apprehensive about it. )

Oh My GOD!! It's awesome. I thought it was good in the beginning, but the last 5 or so episodes it's really hit its stride and is just amazing. It's WONDERFUL!!!

I think you're really right about shipping affecting your outlook.

I suppose I'm weird and can ship a couple on any show and still enjoy everything else about it (which might explain why I don't hate VM right now on the whole.)

Then again, I also ship couples for being totally fucking helpless (oh--the reason I love RM on The OC was because they were too damaged to really work.)

I don't know. I'm a HUGE Jim/Pam shipper and although I am not thrilled that it seems like the love between them has been lost and their scenes together aren't the same, I am still loving The Office whole-heartedly. So even though I am not thrilled with the shipper-aspect of the show, I have so much more to love about the show that it doesn't really bother me. Also, I can respect how they are playing out the Jim/Pam angle...it makes sense to me. Same goes with other shows in which I ship a couple. I don't ditch the show just because things between my couple aren't going as I would like it to as long as there are other aspects to the show that are keeping me there and as long as it continues to make sense to me ( ... )

But I also think VM must have done something wrong because I have never given up on a show that I loved before just because of the doom of my ship, until this one.

And that's where Rob Thomas so screwed up. What he (and I doubt many showrunners) realize is that you can sorta screw up a show and most viewers will still stick around, but if you totally fuck up a couple, you're more inclinced to lose a viewer because it's THAT attachment that generally leads to die-hard loyalty.

What an awesome post, Jennifer and I completely agree with your assessment on how shipping a couple affects how you view the show ( ... )
