Oh, I think I need to do a Kobol prompt. I love Kobol fics. So much. I love that it was the first time they ever called each other Bill and Laura. I love their 'chat' under the tarp, their knees touching. This drabble makes me think of all those happy things I love.

Very clever use of the prompt too.

And I love this: She wondered how easy it suddenly was. Maybe it had always been like that between them. This seems so true. Like they were making things harder than they needed to be previously and they suddenly just woke up to themselves.

Kobol prompt, yes please! right there with you in your love for kobol fics, it's such a fantastic place to see and imagine, what happens between them is beautiful and the touchstone for their whole relationship, suddenly much closer than before as they truly start seeing each other for the first time (love how you put it: "they suddenly just woke up to themselves.") this drabble was actually one of the few where the story came first and i made it fit the challenge, because i just really really wanted for them to be back on kobol, so i think the use of the prompt is slightly sneaky ;) but i'm really glad you like it :)

This is a beautifully descriptive piece and very effectively evokes the change that occurred in their relationship as a result of Kobol. There was an ease and understanding between them after those events which hadn't existed before, a willingness to really look deeper than the façades their respective positions forced upon them.

Lovely work. Thank you.

two things i really wanted to do here: capturing the mystical atmosphere of kobol - a place that is really a character in its own right, transforming relationships, paving ways for future developments that go beyond the "mere" signposting to earth - in writing, and show how their relationship changed from working against each other to standing side by side, how it suddenly became personal.
no clue whether i actually achieved the first one :D but really happy that you think i managed the second one. thank you!

I certainly think you achieved the first goal too. With your rich description of Kobol, you give the planet the importance it deserves given what a pivotal role it served in setting the scene for so much of what followed.

thanks! glad you like it. and yes, i totally agree, kobol really was the turning point for their relationship, allowing them to see behind the others' mask of title and responsibilities and get a glimpse at a person they could and would eventually fall in love with.

A successful drabble is one that feels much longer than it is and this feels very expansive. Perhaps because I can see their relationship stretching before them.

And this is the first time we see Bill in a different sort of uniform, in real lighting, and he does seem very different. Excellent moment to capture for Laura!

you are absolutely right! it hadn't occured to me before, but whereas bill knows laura before she became president, laura only ever knew bill as the stoic military commander before kobol. totally makes sense that it was such a revelation for her to suddenly see a man with a name rather than a title, a father hugging his son, a confidant bringing books.

I love Kobol fic. It's the first time they can step away from their titles and offices and just be two people, together on a quest. And as in all good quest literature, the hero is noble and the heroine is brave, they overcome obstacles, gain their goal and find each other.

the quest parable really does fit the kobol arc, you're right. yes, also the overall story arc (she said to herself...), but somehow the mythic quality of the place, ancient forests and even more ancient stone circles really make it as beautifully simple as that: >just be two people, together on a quest

Yep. On the Home of the Gods, kind of worthless to get all stuck up with one's temporary titles in a very fragile human society on the run.
