Two people dressed in black entered the barn. The man had a limp, maybe a false leg Bill surmised. The woman had long dark hair and a smirk. Laura gasped beside him, she recognized one of them and was about to yell something. Bill grabbed her and clamped his hand over her mouth.
“Shhhh Laura, you’ll give us away.” Bill let go.
She nodded. “I know her. Tory worked on our ranch. Traitor.”
“Just relax. Their day will come.”
They watched the couple wander slowly around and look up. Thankfully Bill had pulled the ladder up behind them.
“Let’s go. No one’s here,” the man said.
Tory looked up once more suspiciously. “Okay. Brother Cavil will be along tomorrow. We can decide what to do then.”
They left the barn.
Bill looked Laura. “We should wait a bit to make sure they’re gone.”
Laura sat up. “Good idea.” Bill couldn’t help but chuckle. “Not sure what you’re laughing at Marshal.”
“You look…” Bill hesitated.
Laura’s top was undone far too low to be appropriate, hay stuck here and there and her hair was a dishevelled mess at best. He reached over and plucked a long piece of straw from between her breasts and put it between his lips. “Beautiful.”
“I may be a married woman, you know,” she said as she moved toward him.
“No you’re not. We’ll prove that soon enough.” She moved over him and kissed him hard pushing him back into the piles of hay. She liked kissing him, his rough skin and wavy hair; his spicy smell and vibrant blue eyes. She let out a hum of delight as he kissed her back with just as much passion.
It finally seemed real that she might move beyond her past and find a happy future with Bill.
