The Man from Alarka

This Sunday my grandfather passed away. He was 91 years old and died peacefully in his sleep. My brother and I made the trek up to Alarka, the small community of my Woodard ancestors nestled in the thick of Swain County near Bryson City. That was beautiful. It made me cry a bit. I feel like I've been to too many funerals the past couple of years. My uncle was buried behind the church beside the woods where he and my mom and brothers played as kids. Across the holler from where they grew up.
It was a pretty day too.
Great, now I'm crying again.
And if you cannot cry at a funeral where Taps is played, you're made of stronger stuff than I.

And I can't imagine how you would fit in with your family.

I'm sorry for your loss.
