Darn my runaway fingers.

I set out tonight to write a drabble for the latest prompt at
marauders100 and it ended up a bit long, but I like it how it is. So I'll have to have another go at the drabble. So here it is. :D

Title: Secrets
Characters: Remus/Sirius
Rating: PG
Authors Note: This one got away from me, but I like it. :D

In the beginning their love was a secret between them and the dark corridors and alcoves scattered around the castle that became sole witness. Hurried kisses and rubbing and groping that was kept hidden and was all they could afford themselves, afraid to take it into the dorms for fear of being found out. It was too new, too sacred to sully by letting others in. It belonged to them alone.

In the middle they were all ease and gentle touches, their love was in the open now, stronger and accepted by their friends as inevitable. The hurried groping melted into passionate couplings, long kisses and quiet snuggles. The secret no longer belonged to them, but it was okay. They belonged to each other.

In the end they became distant and withdrawal, the comfort they had shared between them had faded into mistrust within the shadows of war. They met rarely, but it was always hurried, hushed and impersonal, as if by reaching out they would be loosing a part of themselves. That part they hoarded selfishly in stark juxtaposition to the melding of hearts that had marked them in their innocence. They suffered through much time apart and now the secret they kept was from each other. In their separation they were prodded and manipulated into further mistrust, and the enmity that grew out of their love was no less fierce than its predecessor had been.

The aftermath left them ruined, the love they had held was broken apart, and they had only themselves to blame. The chasm between them had deepened and the betrayal that had finally sundered them was heaped upon two sets of broad shoulders, both grown hunched and far, far too thin. And while some prisons are made of walls, some are formed in the mind. They lived now in separate cages, howling at the moon, mournful cries that called out to each other and wept for the loss of more than youth; the loss of more than innocence.

But there was still a secret kept, and a spark of possibility. For no secret can be kept forever, and there are more powerful things than fear and mistrust. They would not make the same mistake again.
