So we were, in fact, in Chicago. In my hotel room. At a publishing convention. HOWEVER, what I kept trying to explain to you is that blizzards typically do not involve wings and tiny, icy fangs, and sustained high-frequency screeching. I know these things are hard to come to grips with, but it was sort of my idea to pirate music that night so I guess I shouldn't be too hard on you.

The pancakes were good, though. Round two when we hit the advance screening of Mikeyway: Unicorn Warrior this summer?

It was not far from Topeka, Kansas, in a small town in the cornfields. You know the one. You grew up there. I robbed a liquor store; your daddy owned it. He was the crooked sort: drank more liquor than he sold, and when the fumes in his liver made him angry he took it out on the wife and kid. I told him to put his hands on his head; he put his hands on a Winchester rifle instead. I shot him dead before he could do me the same favor. You walked in and my heart sank; you didn't look like someone I wanted to shoot. But you just looked down at your daddy lying in his pool of warm blood and smiled, so I took you with me. Best steal I ever made.

You caught on quick to the game and soon you were planning jobs like a pro. We were unbeatable, uncatchable, and we blazed a trail across plains and deserts, leaving banks and 7-11s gutted in our wake. As I write this we're in a roachtrap motel somewhere in West Texas; you're in the shower and I'm watching The Royal Tannenbaums on Pay-Per-View TV. I figure a few more jobs and we can
