It's not at all ridiculous to attempt to be at harmony with one's surroundings. Thermodynamics does not apply in our situation because we're constantly being funded with a supply of energy in the form of sunlight. The world can continue moving towards order for a long, long time before the sun explodes.
And buddhist monks are definitely dealing with a lot of real stuff that we don't know about, I mean, it just takes a couple random articles about meditation to see that there's something serious going on when they meditate. http://www.physorg.com/news10312.html http://www.physorg.com/news4418.html
These people have discipline that Western science would do well to learn from.
