Over the past week, I keep thinking of this question and my possible answers to it: if you could bring any musician back from the dead, which one would you pick?
If some kind of exchange deal with the Afterlife can be worked out, here's my list of those I'd like back... & who I'd swap them for.
Ronnie Lane... for Jack Johnson Mick Ronson... for Steve Miller Kirsty MacColl... for Dolores O'Riordan Joe Strummer... for John Lydon Charles Mingus... for Paul Schaeffer Otis Redding... for Guy Sebastian Mick Karn... for any member of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Haircut 100 or ABC you like. Hell, take 'em all!! Lobby Lloyd... for Andrew Stockdale Glenn Gould... for Lang Lang Simon Jeffes... for André Rieu Les Paul... for George Benson Lee Brilleaux... for Michael Bolton Ronnie James Dio... for Ozzy Osborne Frank Zappa... for either of the guys in Ween Cannonball Adderley... for Kenny G
And now I'm going to go look up three quarters of that list. But bahahahahahahah, YES to tossing out Andrew Stockdale! That fucking poser and musical criminal. *high five* And fuck yes, bring Charlie Mingus back cos I want to actually see him play before I properly go and listen to him, knowing it's him.
Really Joe Strummer for Johnny Lydon? Provocative choice there, some would say, J ... :p
Poor Michael Bolton and Kenny G ... everybody loves to hate them, it makes me feel quite sorry for them. Poor chaps, they're just trying to make the music they love. *giggle* (see, now i'm being provocative)
What do you think of Roland Kirk?! I assume you would have heard some of his stuff with Mingus?
Joe Strummer wins for passion, intelligence & plain old musical ability. Lydon was & is a monotonal, sloganeering whinger.
As to some of my other choices, it's more that the people on my list either died early, before they were 'finished', or in unfair (relative)obscurity, while my 'Swap Victims' have been allowed to succeed & flourish in the same fields with a fraction of the talent & none of the vision... or passion.
