if you don't fight, then you don't win

Okay. Finally, finally wrote that scene wot's been sitting on me for the past few months. I think it turned out fairly well. Maybe a bit too much descriptive detail but the writing group assures me every single time that I haven't gone overboard. I'm still not entirely sure I believe them on that count but maybe that's a good thing. Keeps my purple ( Read more... )

Yay for productivity!!

And I do agree with Miss Sheba. So just finish writing it - *then* perform necessary surgery.

Do you read specific things to help you write? I don't necessarily mean consciously, but do you crave certain books or certain genres while you're writing? I find that I do - what I read does influence my thought patterns, and I need certain thought patterns to write certain things. Kinda.

Heh, aye. To both. *nods and tattoos on forehead*

You know, I actually don't ... how curious, I never thought about that before. But having said that, remember I'm a fair way into this novel so Arushka's voice is quite established by now and I get very easily into her voice. That's always my major concern, establishing the voice which is pretty much style for me.

When I start a novel though, I may either deny myself all books or focus only on books that feature a voice I feel is close enough to the one in my head.

Does that make sense?

It's music that does it for me, you know. Only able to write this novel to music of The Church and Kate Bush. :p

Hmm, interesting. I find music way too distracting unless it's a carefully selected playlist - it has more of an immediate effect on my emotions than reading does.

Yep, that makes perfect sense - after you're quite far into a novel, the voice is a steady continuation of your writing - you kinda enter the right state of mind/mood/character.

Oh, totally! Enormously useful, that effect!

Exactly. *nods* I do find sometimes what I'm reading will affect my sentence structure a bit but then I just have to notice and tweak that. And that's what editing's for. :p
