I haven't been posting, partly because I have been applying for actual jobs, including about four significant anxiety attacks over three weeks of working on one job application. I hope the fact that I'm recognising them sooner and am somewhat able to defuse them is a good sign ( Read more... )

I finally came to some kind of udnerstanding of the US situation when I managed to translate, for lack of a better word, 'African-American' into 'Rom.' That gave me some kind of cultural parallell.

Actually, I should say that I came to understand the attitude of white people towards African-Americans (that being what was udner discussion at the time) - kind of a 'oh, they're more or less unconsciously racist the way I am about the Rom, alas.'

I suspect there isn't any true parallel to US white-black racism, but the Rom might be the closest European parallel. There looks to me to be a whole heap of sexual stuff tied up in US race relations that I don't recall about the Rom.

I don't think it's an exact parallell, but in the sense of 'people who have lived here a long time yet are somehow not accepted as equals.'

This is the first I've heard of the drama. Is it the extended discussion about Ms. Bear's book? (That's what I found during a search for recent LJ drama.) It looks as if I'll be doing nearly as much blog reading as I did for the Open-Source Boob Project drama. (Which had some good stuff contained therein and some really annoying stuff, too.)

It began with Elizabeth Bear, yes, but the Fail has gone well beyond that now. rydra_wong keeps track of stuff so the rest of us don't have to.
