I know the writers were very out in the open about pulling in a "popular" kid, theoretically to attempt to subvert it later...but I don't see a ton of evidence of that coming to pass. From where I'm at, it sure looks like it's getting set up so he's swanned in to save the day, and in the lead up he and Rachel will get all the screen time. And the "freak" stereotypes, who already loved and were devoted to Glee club - Tina the "punk" Asian girl, Mercedes the "diva" African American girl, Kurt the gay guy, and Artie the guy in the wheelchair whose audition we didn't even get to see - really will just be the backup singers.
Which, eh, not interesting to me, no matter how good the music is (and don't think I didn't squee when he did Mr. Cellophane).
