I should be writing about Vietnam but...

I'm learning more and more what I want from real fiction, why so many books on bookstore shelves bore me [though bookstores are always heaven] when I start reading them... and it's my quick assessment of the amount of love an author has for their characters. And the lack thereof always comes through, like holes in the roof during a thunderstorm. ( Read more... )

SNOB! And yes...it is a crime.

In my personal and extremely biased opinion...you're being contrary for the sake of being contrary. J.K. Rowling = GOD. The sooner you except her inherent infallibility as an author the sooner I can take you seriously as a human being.

I would write a longer and more serious comment here, but 1) we already had this lovely argument over food 2) my brain is functioning on less cylinders than usual tonite and 3) I just spent 7.5 hours reading HP fanfiction so...

Don't worry...I still <3 you!

Art Historians always make up words. It's our way! >;P It's called laziness but, I don't know that Dan Brown is an actual art historian so beat on him as you will. I definitely don't like the way he writes nor do I appreciate his main character. Flattest personality ever... and it's totally made after him!

Heya, Rini. :)

A lot of people find it unfair but you have to take into account that a lot of Americans buy his books to not have to think much while reading. It's the same reason Romance Novels & the like are so popular. Easy writing = Easy reading = Big Bucks. Fast entertainment baby, that's what commerce is about.

I got mad at her as well but what I find interesting is that the kids I teach also had issues, especially with how she ended the story. They're all around 10/11 years old and the conversation basically had them say they expected more from J.K. Rowling.

I'm still always a weeeeee bit surprised when you make posts like this, since when I met you I wore all these sorts of insecurities on my sleeve, like making my reading be worth something to me, and you sounded like you were over them. That said, obviously I don't think it's a crime to want the things you read to be furthering your goals for yourself; I think it's a damn fine idea, and something I wish more people would do.
But I suspect you already knew all that, as we've hashed it out more than once. So in the interests of not being just a broken record, did you know that Adrienne Rich and Michelle Cliff, extremely famous and not-so-famous authors, live in San Francisco? ;D
