Kindle questions

I'm thinking of getting Kindle Fire. I'd like to have something to listen to music on, watch movies, read books and browse online so it looks interesting. I assume that it will cost more than just the $199 for the device itself. Does anybody have one of these or something similar and can tell me about the extra costs for data? I realize that ( Read more... )

After the Kindle 3, the 3G service was discontinued. Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, and Kindle Fire are all wi-fi devices so you just bear the cost of connecting to a wi-fi service or finding a hot spot that's free. However, even back when there was 3G services on devices, there was no added data charge.

And, yes, if you make an accidental purchase through Kindle and contact customer support they will usually refund your money and remove the item from your library.

Thanks for the data info and about the mistaken purchase. I thought I was clicking to buy a hard copy.

Love that icon, btw.

I have a Kindle Fire, and there's no cost for data download, except that you need a wireless network. I have a wireless network at home, so I tend to do most of my downloading of books and music and stuff there. But Starbucks has free wi-fi; I've gotten online with my Fire there. And more and more places are offering free wi-fi now - libraries, cafes, restaurants, even grocery stores.

Thanks. Do you enjoy the Kindle Fire a lot? They look really fun. I have tried to set up a wireless network but haven't managed to get it working yet but this will make me get to it, or find someone to help.

If stuff isn't stored on the device, though, how can you access it other places where there might not be wifi, say while riding the bus or some other location besides home? I mean, if you can download something and then have it on the device to listen to or watch somewhere else, then that would be fine, but the Amazon site kept talking about not having to worry about having enough memory...?

Thanks for the info!

Your downloads ARE stored on your Kindle. The reference Amazon is making is about the cloud. You don't have to worry about having enough memory because you can keep some of your downloads in the archive and re-download them if you want to. So, for example, I have a number of books that I've already read, but I don't want to completely delete them. So, I just delete them from my device and they're still stored on my Amazon library. If I want to read them again, I just re-download them from my library when I have wireless activated ( ... )

Oh, thanks, that makes sense. (Do I sound incredibly old to be asking these kinds of questions??) And it's good to have your perspective on the different devices. I'd love to get an iPad, but since I go to Amazon so much these days, the Kindle keeps looming out at me. I really haven't researched any of these up til now. Though reading would be nice on it, I think I might like doing all the other stuff it can do as much or more. I realized that I don't listen to music very much now that I don't have a car and wanted to look into getting an MP3 player of some kind and noticed that they are all pretty expensive too and so I thought since the Kindle Fire does that too it might be the way to go.

I seem to get eye strain just reading on my laptop these days. I guess the color screen doesn't use the e-ink... you'd think they could make that work too in their top of the line device. Again, thanks for the info.

I've been researching Kindles as well, got far enough to buy a Kindle 4.0 Thursday, but it turned out to be stolen. Pfft. Still thinking a 4.0 would be good for my mother, and either a 4.0 or a Touch for me. The Fire is just too expensive though.

I have the Kindle touch. Love it. I use Calibre to convert fanfic to read on it. Even have a couple of your stories converted for future re reading :)

Before I got my Kindle, I had a Sony EReader, so I didn't understand the value of Calibre. Now that I have my Kindle I couldn't live without Calibre! It's amazing :D Between that and Squee!Book I convert everything from LJ fic to ebooks.
