Liz flashback on doggie sniffsaprilp_katjeFebruary 27 2007, 13:01:44 UTC
The conversation with Liz April refers to--from when April was five--is a reference to a 1996 strip collected in Growing Like a Weed. Five-year-old Apes asks Liz why Eddie sniffs everything, and Liz says that it's what animals do. She goes on to say that dogs have a keen sense of smell, and they use it to determine if there is food around, if other dogs have been in their territory, and to identify their humans, since "each of us has our own particular scent." Apes goes off to where John is sitting in an armchair and she sniff-sniff-sniffs at him.
I really hope the Lynnions meant April's question yesterday to be rhetorical. Else the girl is incapable of learning.

I was trying to work in some of the nasty exploits of Margaret Atwood's Zenia (from The Robber Bride) with Z-girl Zenia. Jeremy's comments have helped a lot (thanks, howtheduck.

Zapata's real first name is the feminine version of the Mexican revolutionary's first name. Mackenzie Bowell U is an amalgam of a lot of bad university architecture around southern Ontario, namely the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (location), Brock U (big tower), Trent U, University of Toronto at Scarborough (bad connected modern buildings) and York U (student res towerblocks). I'm sure a survey of post-WWII educational building in the US would come up with similiar buildings.

I went to the Eaton Centre today. (It's Toronto's central shopping mall at the notorious intersection of Yonge and Dundas.) It's the last day of school before March Break -- Toronto has a PA day tomorrow; not sure about the 'burbs -- so a lot of kids were cutting classes. I can say with authority that Duncan's description of the outerwear teenage girls are wearing at this time of year is accurate. The only variation seems to be length -- some jackets fall below the waist and some fall below the hips. The better quality jackets are lightweight, and the cheaper ones make their wearers look like the Michelen Man. I would link to a photo of one, but the web sites for the stores in the Eaton Centre have switched to the spring catalogues. I saw one poor girl with a red jacket and wondered if she gets taunted by her peers. (I resisted the urge to go up to her and say, "Hey, Apes.")

Oddly enough, I *have* seen a few Dee-cuts. I made the mistake of hiring one of them, and it was one of the worst decisions I ever made. To me, Dee-cut = Complete Psycho; Do Not Hire.
