Bass Guitars

First, I know that it has been ages since I last posted, but I need some info. What is a good brand for a bass guitar. I want to learn to play, and need something to practice on. Again think cheap here.

Interestingly enough, I've been playing bass guitar with a little group since October ( ... )

My personal choice has been a Fender over anything (mine's a Fender jazz bass, of course, depends on what you're planning to play music wise -- I needed one I could not only play jazz with, but trick into sounding like a classical instrument).

I started on an Ibanez, though... it was a bit banged up, but decent sounding enough.

Probably best idea, though? Check Craig's List and see if someone in your area is trying to sell one cheap before you hit a music store, and of course try it out, too.

I have big hands, so when I went looking for one, the one I ended up getting is one that had the neck modified a bit (more for people who not only have big hands but also started on an upright bass instead of an electric).

Husband says that he started with one that was made by Applause -- was a few hundred dollars new, but worked well.

And this is all pertaining to four string bass guitars -- if you're looking six string, that's a whole different animal.
