Can this only be used for paid layouts? I tried using it for a free layout and it didn't work...

It should work, I tested it on an free account.
make sure you have flexible squares set :)

Yes I have it set. I saved the code as style.css using adobe go live. Uploaded it using ripway (the same that I use for my personal journal). Entered the link to the file in the right spot. It still doesn't work!

The journal is perfect_parent if you want to take a look at it.
