If you work there now, why not just double check with the faculty members you've been in contact with?
I know sometimes it's easier to ask this community (we're less intimidating...sometimes), but the people who really know the answer are on the committee.

That said, I don't think it's that big of a deal, as long as you do answer the questions well and succinctly.

As long as you answer both questions, I think writing a single statement would be fine unless they specifically say to answer separately.

oh wow! i'm pretty sure i'm going to the same exact university for my MA as the questions were exactly the same.

i used the first question to give them my full, standard SOP/Personal Statement, which was about 1.5 double-spaced pages long. it gave them the information they asked for but also included background on what led me to this point.

for the second question, I summed up my SOP in one sentence: "My primary interest is X." Then I briefly listed a few specific topics which I would be very interested in researching in greater detail.

the third question i answered in just one sentence.
