Research-only PhD

Hi gang. Please forgive my total ignorance about the above. I'm interested in doing a PhD program in New Zealand, because my area of research is in Polynesian migrant communities. I've written to some professors and they've been helpful and encouraging, but I don't want to betray my lack of familiarity with a research-only PhD. I'm assuming that ( Read more... )

Thanks for your two NZcents everyone. It sounds like the independence and flexibility of the research-only PhD are the pros, but the isolation and lack of supporting coursework are the cons.

I just really question the need to be in residence for 3-4 years as the NZ schools I checked out require. It seems like I could just be in the field most of that time and talk with my supervisor on Skype. Unless that means you're expected to pay the tuition for that amount of time even if you're doing research elsewhere.

I applied for a few fellowships in the US so come March/April I'll have a better idea of my options.
