SOP Question

Alright, for those of you who don't know, I am applying to MFA programs in creative writing, and am currently working on my SOP. I understand, as I've said, that the writing sample is way more important, but this just happens to be one of the parts I'm focusing on right now. hi there- i'm also applying to creative writing mfa programs this year. from my research, i've found that most "experts" on the subject say not to mention specific faculty just in case another faculty member in the department is reading your application. i guess maybe if you mentioned all of them...but it makes sense to be safe and not to mention any unless specifically asked.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought, though I'm not sure what you mean by not mentioning specific faculty in case other faculty are reading it. Because they might feel you expect only to work with that faculty member? I suppose it makes sense, given that many programs attract people because of famous faculty members, with no guarantee that most students will spend that much time with them, and may be disappointed to find themselves working with professors they're not as enthusiastic about. For my part, I'm not as concerned with famous faculty as I am with faculty that really know what they're doing.

well, i think it was the creative writing MFA handbook said that you might offend the other faculty that you don't mention by...well, not mentioning them. but i think it depends on the program.
