I'm actually just asking out of curiosity but are MAs in subject (rather than in Education) necessary to get teaching jobs lately, or are you just doing this because you want to do more with your History degree and not do Education?

No, I don't think they're necessary, I just want to study the content more b/c I'm really interested in it, and I feel it would make me a better teacher if I know the subject matter better and can then apply that in a classroom. I also think there are other ways of getting certified other than an M.Ed, so if I can't get funding for the history, maybe I'd investigate those more. Ideally I'd like both, but that depends on funding...

Private schools often prefer subject-area experience to education degrees. MAs aren't always necessary, but they're definitely an asset.

If you aren't looking to get a job in a university as an academic you might want to consider looking at Canadian MA programs - they have way lower tuition fees and generally come at least partially funded. None of them require the GRE.
